The Carnabies : West London's best band since the who ?

How London's UK winners went from the Emergenza Festival to working with Jon Astley (The Who, The Stones ect). We caught up with Jack Mercer, lead singer of The Carnabies.

JACK, IT'S BEEN A COUPLE OF MONTHS SINCE YOUR INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE ON THE STAGE AT THE TAUBERTAL OPEN AIR FESTIVAL IN GERMANY, ARE YOUR MEMORIES STILL FRESH?

Yeah we’re still buzzing from the whole weekend! It was an amazing 3 days !. We loved it, if i’m honest though the whole performance is a bit of a blur, it always is, i can never remember everything, but we have it all on video!  You know these things...big stage, lots of drinks. It was amazing !

WHAT WAS IT LIKE SHARING THE STAGE AND BACKSTAGE WITH SO MANY UNSIGNED MUSICIANS FOM AROUND THE WORLD?

Wicked! So many stories were being shared, some we can’t repeat! And there wasn’t really a language barrier, everyone could speak English which made everything much easier.  We made some real good friends and are greatful for it.

YOUR BAND'S GUITAR PLAYER WAS ONE OF THE MAIN TECHNICAL WINNERS, DO YOU THINK THE LEVEL OF MUSICIANSHIP WAS HIGH AT THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL?

I think the competition was high, and we’re lucky to have won the title of best guitarist, and the prize! We needed a new amp any way, so that just made everything better. It just so happens that the Amp is an amazing Marshall valve stck. So cool. But yeah there were a lot of great musicians at Taubertal. We were just amazed by the level.

APART FROM THE FUN AND GAMES WHAT ELSE DID YOU GET FROM DOING SUCH INCREDIBLE OPEN AIR FESTIVAL? DO YOU THINK YOU DEVELOPED AS A BAND?

Definitely, we went abroad with all of our mates for a week the week before, and we still had a better time over one weekend in Germany. Playing the festival We tried not to take it too seriously too but it sort of overcame us. It was an amazing experience. Of course we wanted to win, but we also wanted to enjoy ourselves and celebrate winning in the UK! We’ve all said it was the best weekend we’ve ever had. And since then, we’ve definitely developed, we work harder and more frequently, and the ball is really starting to roll thanks to the team at Émergence.

YOU'RE STILL FAIRLY YOUNG AND DID WELL ON YOUR PROMOTION THROUGH THE SEASON BEFORE GOING TO THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL, DO YOU THINK YOU'VE IMPROVED ON YOUR PROMOTIONAL SKILL? DID ME FORCING YOU TO PROMOTE HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON YOU?

Yeah we tend to leave things to the last minute, which can end in a big “D’OH!” but not any more, we’re more organized when it comes to promoting, and we’re starting to get the hang of doing it slightly differently...We don’t want to give too much away! So yes being nagged to promote definitely did  us some good!  The Émergence manager (Walter) was an excellent motivator and gave us some good tips.

...AND FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR NEW UP-COMING BANDS THAT ARE THINKING ABOUT DOING THE EMERGENZA FESTIVAL?

Do it! Work hard and promote hard, but most of all enjoy yourselves, the venues are great, and so are the people. And if you’re lucky enough to go to Germany like we did, grab the opportunity by the balls and show them what the UK has to offer!
