The Critic's Corner

1. CABIRIA A great performance that came straight out of the dark years of old europe. The great vocalist is also a fantastic theatrical performer in the style of Nina Hagen and Kate Bush. The band is riding the progressive wave like a confident surfer would on his board. Competent and tight, this was a band of many faces and all very pleasant. 2. BAWDY FESTIVAL Hardcore guitars scratching on great grooves. A visual spectacle that is Bawdy Festival: the clowns remind us of a French version of Slipknot with a very distinctive European touch. These five boys put a great effort in making sure that the “ stage impact” is there and the crowd showed their appreciation by cheering their performance. “Scary” characters including the joker and the one from a clockwork orange makes this band great entertainment value. Good show. 3. DEAR CATASTROPHE Slam dancing and enough energy to feed a power station. Heavy beats and power chords. All this and more. These five lads from Dublin know a thing or two about stage havoc and put on a blistering set with tinges of american emo hardcore reminding us that bands like this exhist on this of the pond as well. Angry, powerful .....just great. 4. LAMENT It's melodic rock in the style of radiohead circa “ok computer”. Solid rythms entwined with melodic guitar sounds and fine vocals. The singer's range is very good and always “in the pocket”. Hints of Thom Yorke (obviously) and Robert Smith from The Cure are present in their songs that could well work both in the indie scene as well as mainstream. A good performance with a little margin for improving and researching their own sound.....still, the essence is there. 5. CONCUBINE Metal tinged with funky grooves. A healthy rythm section, a great front man and a guitar player that did his “home work” as far as metal “sounds” are concerned. This is what Concubine offers. A great performance with a level of high energy and the ability to get the audience pumped. Adrenalina, grovves and metal……a great combination. 6. HUMANO A band that seems to be enjoying themselves immensly. They certainly don’t take themselves too seriously especially when giving hints of U2 impersonations (or at least it seems that way). A good live band with a drummer with a great groove. Strong backing vocals and perfect harmonies. Despite their “similarities” with the Irish band they are after all a solid pop group with a good stage presence and the courage to actually sing in spanish, bringing a touch of warm mediterranean sunshine to this very drizzly grey day. A great effort. 7. KID AT THE BACK A good trio with a funky rock sound. Very good musicianship and hints of Hendrix guitar sounds especially with the use of the wah pedal. These three Londoners managed to spurt something out that was very different from what we’ve seen all day. A full sound considering that there was only 3 members making the noise. A solid drummer locked in with a groovy bassist and a very able guitar player. This is proof that you only need three musicians to make a band, especially if you’re as competent as these lads. Good effort. 8. VERSE OF TREK Simple, creative and effective. That’s how we can describe this three piece band from Bordeaux. Enough energy to get the audience interested from the very beginning and gradually winning them until they were in the palm of their hands. Interesting guitar sounds mixed with great original vocals and a solid rythm section did the job for these boys. Having said that you can also see a bit roughness around the edges, still there’s enough talent there to oversee what could be just a small detail as we see these boys destined for bigger and better things. 9. FLASHMOB God bless young kids. These lads are not afraid of a bit of rain and the scarse crowd (it was around midday after all). They put on a show with so much effort and confidence that you have to respect them for it. Ska and hints of reggae mixed with funky sounds. A great
