From the pitts

Starting Wednesday evening at the 31st Street Pub in Pittsburgh an assortment of bands played "The Emergenza Festival" each night with results of the competition announced at the conclusion of each evening. Night 1. The show began with a band called "Havoc Theory". "We''re Havoc Theory and we''re gonna rock your face off!!!",came the words from the front-man. This hardcore metal band were very young but equally as bold. The members have some good on stage personality. Songs included "Jack the Ripper" and "doomsday". Playing fast and hard it was a good start. ''So Have I'' , have a brawny singer from whom you wouldn''t expect such vocal style. This straight up rock band got the room really moving. ''Good Seed'' began their set by thanking the audience " We are Good Seed, thank you for growing with us.." and broke into their first number. Four dapper dudes including a strong vocalist who plays guitar and is accompanied by an acoustic guitar and a bassist that plays a hollow shelled bass, in my opinion Good Seed have Sprouted. ''MINDSET'' Slow haunting and powerful. This band was quite effects driven which provided nice buildups, and at times thrashing speed. Some murmuring vocals and a drummer who smashes the cymbals with power and precision. ''And Chaos Ensued'' Straight up metal, no surprise from steel city. The particulate in the air must have had no effect on the vocalists lungs because he belted out consistent screams of power the entire set. The musicians accompanied and surely brought the chaos to the pub this night. ''PHAT MAN-D and the LIQUITONES'', A Pittsburgh celebrity in her own right, ''Mandy'' as she known off stage chose this season to model her blue sparkled star suit with a full looming collar. She filled the room with song as she crooned in smooth sensuous tones while being accompanied with strong sax and keys from the Liquitones. Some nice slow jazz switched the gears and soothed weary ears. Night 2.The bill included the bands -"The Shuttlecocks","Big Green Tanks","level sd","Fear Itself","Autumn in August", Ninjas who met God","Eviction Notice" and "Skin Side Out". A spread legged punk stance held the singer while he gave a vocal assault through a song called "Wanker". Strong punk chants and not one song that was over 3 minutes long. They ended with a little ditty called "Emocaust" I think it let everyone know that if your not a punk your not gonna fly with ''The Shuttlecocks''. Thoughtful vocals and wandering melodies filled ''The Big Green Tanks" set. Their unassuming stage presence gives you a chance to really watch them play and appreciate the music. At the other end of the spectrum ''Level SD'' was as loud as a freight train and featured dual vocals and tempo switch ups. A broken string broke up the set but the drummer and bassist improvised and filled the space. ''Fear Itself'' put on a strong, lick heavy set with biting vocals. Something for the rocker in all of us. These guys could write a soundtrack of music to drive your American muscle-car to. Acoustic driven college rock, I think would best describe the sound of ''Autumn in August''. Twenty year old front man with tight curls delivered tight vocals while the drummer voiced in accompaniment. "California" was the song that gave the audience warmth in the early Pittsburgh winter thursday night. Keys, trumpets, dread-lox, fur hats, vocalists in their boxers, these guys have antics! ''Ninjas who met God'' have quite a following in Pittsburgh and we all saw why. With songs like "Yahtzee" and "Electronic Battleship" this band isn''t playing board games. The super funk loaded signature song had the audience singing along "we are the ninjas who met f#$king God!" Funk with extra flavor ''Eviction Notice'' featured DJ Bonicks on the wheels of steel in deep Pittsburgh style. The vocalist kept the audience bumpin''. Huggy on bass and Daru on drums fully funked it up while Tim, equally skilled wit
