Taking Avalon
Velvet Revolver, Coldplay, AudioSlave, Weezer: Just a few of the names that have graced the Avalon stage in recent months. Saturday night, however, Boston witnessed the 14 National Emergenza Finalists on the biggest night of their musical careers on stage at this famous venue.
The term smooth is an understatement. These 14 bands realized a dream on saturday when they took the stage to play for a packed house at one of the United States most famous venues. Sister Domatilla opened up the night with some hip hop jams that got the crowd going. It was a perfect high energy way to start things off. The Mark and Plan 17 followed. It was great seeing these guys on the Avalon stage. Some people dream their entire lives of getting a chance to play a show in front of that many people. Saturday that happened for these guys and can happen many more times to come. Sweetfist jumped on the stage and took the Band''s band award. That is probably the most prestigious prize of all considering all the other bands chose this. They walked away with some sweet pedals from Snarling Dogs. Ript played next. These guys bring a ton of energy to the room and backed by their lead singer Michael you can expect to see a lot of these guys in the future. Michael also took home with him the Wireless Sennheiser mic for being voted best singer. Restoring Poetry in Music hit the stage with some solid instrumental and rhyming skills. A big congratulations to these guys for winning the regional final, not only in Washington D.C., but also winning the big regional final in Philadelphia as well. It is a major accomplishment getting a chance to tour these three major rock cities. Patrick, from RPM, also was fortunate enough to go back to D.C. with a brand new Crate Half Stack compliments of St. Louis Music for being voted best guitar player of the night.
Roots Down Below played next and brought a whole new kind of irie energy to the room. They got the crowd jumping up and down. If you missed these guys at Avalon you can pretty much see them everywhere else this summer. Check out their site for details. Fistagon took the stage next with some hard core rock ''n'' roll. They had great fans and a great drummer. Charlie walked away, as one of the two best drummers of the night with a full set of Sabian Cymbols. Natives of The New Dawn, fresh in from Detroit Rock City, took the stage next at Avalon. These guys blew minds on Saturday night. The Natives played a phenomenal set and won over the judges, not to mention a lot of loyal fans of the local bands. These guys basically killed it and played well enough to make it to the Taubertal Open Air Festival in Germany this summer. Not only that, but for wining the whole shootin'' match, they received very substantial packages from the big Boston based promotion company, Powderfinger and online company, Nimbit. The Matt Chase Group brought a different sort of funk jammy jive type thing to the room next. One word for these guys is TIGHT. They played an unbelievable set. Matt took home the beautiful Ernie Ball Music Man custom guitar for being named one of the two best guitar players of the night. Tim of the Matt Chase group took home the Ampeg Bass Amp for being voted best bass player of the night. And Mauricio took home the Entire Maypex pro M drum kit for being named the best drummer of the evening. The band took second place overall and you can be sure to see a whole lot of these guys in the near future. Tunnel Drill hit the stage. These guys bring a totally original tongue and cheek vibe to the hard driving rock ''n'' roll that they play. Tunnel Drill has a great thing going and, once again, keep an eye on them in the future. The fans went bananas and waved their rally rags as Brookfield took the stage. The energy was insane and we could all feel it backstage. These guys played a great set and had a fantastic stage show. Alter Ego followed and also played a terrific show.<
