BIG TIME, BIG SHOW, TORONTO
Fourteen bands, 14 sets, rock show, Opera House, filled to capacity, pro jury, need I say more? Our sponsors have donated a pile of prizes, and we will dish them out to the deserving recipients, and of course there will be the sweet prize an expenses paid trip to Montreal to play in the Canadian Finals at Le Medley and a shot at more cool prizes and an awesome trip to the Tabertaul Festival in Rothenberg Germany. Oh yea my head is spinning; here is a snap shot of the qualifying bands last show at the Reverb.
MAY 12: Monster players SIX O''CLOCK NEWS blasted us with an inane hard-core set and swooped down on the second place spot like a hungry sea gull. SUMMER COLLIDES presented us with a band who has a complete package of rock-n-roll history; look good sound good, play good, and dish out an arsenal of well written songs, off to the races, place your bets.
MAY 13: With a stacked audience this night hit the green light with FIELDBABIES, and although they were not one of the 2 qualifiers, they managed a wild card spot with a respectable high score (hand votes), glad to have them aboard. WINSTON jumped into second place with their traditional big ass stage piano and some of the best-written songs from the Toronto leg of the EMERGENZA festival. MARY JAYNE brought the peeps, the gear, and a super tight lick of brit-influenced music that not only got the fans up and jumping, but also scored themselves a spot in the finals.
MAY 14: Another heavily packed fan turnout led us to believe BYTCH KYDDY would move on to the next round, but they did not, although after all was said and done they managed a qualifying spot at the Opera House, tune-up that Leslie speaker and Hammond organ ''cause were coming to get ya. EIGHTY 8 smoked up a most interesting mix of punk, funk, hard-core, rock-n-roll, and Ford plants worth of attitude to bash there way into the Opera House. Our band that kicked holes into the darkness to bleed daylight was FORGERY, so now Scotty will beam them up for a chance at Germany (Luke, I''m your Father).
MAY 18: DEAD SILENCE hopped up on metal did the deed and pushed on to the Ontario Finals. And to top the night off was SOUND 23 and a cutthroat set of rock to be displayed in front of several hundred people in the next step.
MAY 19: AM GLORY delivered the sound, the stage presence (kudos front guy), and the coach bus full of slightly tipsy fans (in the nick of time I might add), to punish the competition and to move on up.
MAY 20: On our last night one of the two bands to make it through was IRON FISH, these country boys who know how to rock old school, new school, and no school kicked the can all the way to the recycling depot to be melted down and passed on to future generations. The other band was SOUL''D, who made it on merit and music and a dedicated fan base, and of course a sick tight band with an ON FIRE lead singer don''t hurt either.
There you have it, 8 months of hard work, the best of the best are left, you gotta have guts but the guts need fuel, and the best juice for a killer rock show, is music, presence, and promotion, I wish all the best, so lets have some broken legs (not strings) and a wicked show. See you at the House.
