KILLING TORONTO
Point blank, no mercy, taken out back and shot, gone for a long ride with the boys, “first you dig the hole”, and then we have another week of EMERGENZA phase two deceased. It was a bloody mess and we had to call in “the cleaner” our stage manager, Doug Lea. There were, however, a few bands that managed to do some fast talking (and playing) and escaped without injury. Now for the eulogy.
APR 7: YOU ARE HERE is not just a spot on the map; they are a power trio (the bassist and guitarist/singer are EMERGENZA veterans) who kicked up a ruckus of what I call pop rock-metal. In the rap rock category all the way from some damn place up north was DREYFUSS, and they''ll have to make the trip back down again to play the next round at the REVERB. And the band that tore the night a new one was PROXY SET with a truly sick, ill even, performance.
APR 8: S.K.N.S. played an irascible set of scary metal, an amazing performance, but unfortunately did not have the fan support to get them through hard times. The boys from the Azores TOLERANCE 0 did their usual throw down of drop what ever tuning, pierce this, tattoo that, a seven string here, a five string there, you get the picture; hardcore. These hill-billies, RABID ERA (in picture), keep coming to the big city and kicking asses, they also keep sounding better and better, this kind of momentum can go far. FORGERY was the dominator of the evening, a band with the right mix of musical elements and dedication to their fans and they put on a supa-tight highly energetic show, f*ckin'' a well done.
APR 9: Crazy guys STIKMAN whipped out old school hard rock and some mean ass guitar work to earn them selves a spot in the next round. With their trade mark incense and trippy Hindu lamp ARIEL pounded the audience with a wall of psychedelic bongos, sitar, noise and a sh*t pile of rock-n-roll. WINSTON hit the stage with their 500lb piano (buy a god-damn Casio!) and the two brothers who front the band ripped-up a set of piano driven pop rock. And of course the band to reckon with who crushed the competition was SOUL''D, their sexy lead singer with a beautiful voice to match (I asked her to marry me and was politely turned down) led the band through a boogie-woogie-funky-groovy list of rock-n-soul originals, brilliant job.
The funeral procession marches on, this week must be buried, throw a flower on the grave and shed a few tears, or maybe we could do it New Orleans style and have a big drunken party at the cemetery, yea I like that, pass me the bottle and we''ll plot the death of the up-coming week at the 360, see you there, bring your shovel.
