SUPER BOWL MIDDLE EAST 2005
The sun showed its face and the snow finally chilled out, but the 26 bands that played at the third week of the Emergenza Festival''s first round at the Middle East in Cambridge were anything but "chill". Thursday night kicked off with an impressive and eclectic mix of tunes by bands like Micah Howeson, Rainsford, Color and Talea, and Skill of Lying. Porcelain jammed out an impressive set while Still Well Angel, only joining the festival a week ago, absolutely rocked. Finally, anyone in Cambridge could hear the fans of Harriet street go crazy as the first night of shows came to a close. Friday was packed to say the least. If you thought the styles were mixed on thursday you obviously did not come to friday''s show. We had everything from hardcore heavy metal to acoustic rock and punk to raggae. Halo of Thorns, Minatory, and Mars Hill kicked off the night. By the way Mars Hill, I heard INXS is looking for a new lead singer. At first glance it looked like the acoustic jams of Meet the Day were going to mellow things out. Let''s just say they did anything but; they rocked. Sines of Life and One-Less played a couple of harder sets and Sweetfist and their millions of fans ended the night on a "high" note with their harder reggae jams. Saturday was another busy one with a great mixture of sounds. Stiflah, In Itself, The Mark, and Starr Faithfull started the night off with some impressive variations of straight up rock ''n'' roll. Droned and Thyk added some hardcore flavors, and some nice merchandise; everything from stickers to thongs. Alchemilla blew the doors off the Middle East with some serious energy backed by a stocked room full of fans. Finally, we cannot forget to mention the super bowl sunday show. Although attendance was low due to the major sporting event of the day, die hard fans still showed up and the bands on sunday still rocked. Special Fredd kicked off the night (look out for these guys in the future) followed by Driven by Blood and Blue Collar Product. Sol Prophet had the best all-female following we have seen so far while Lumin-R ended the night with an impressive retro Fleetwood Mac sort of thing. All the bands, regardless of the weather or the events of the week, definitely showed up with an extreme amount of energy and drive to make the third week of shows of the festival a powerful one that none of them, or us, will forget anytime soon.
