INDY BANDS TAKE OVER
I don’t want to be too dramatic here, but if you weren’t at Birdy’s for one of Emergenza’s debut nights in Indianapolis, there’s probably something wrong with you. Emergenza’s first of what will be many years in Indy kicked off with a bang similar to The Pixies being run over by Led Zeppelin’s tour bus.
More than 25 Indianapolis bands got on stage last weekend to prove their worth. Green Angel Tower served as the very first Indianapolis band to play an Emergenza night, a young band impressing the crowd with their maturity and musical prowess. Crowd favorites Dystalis (in picture) took the stage later that evening, delivering a lively set that pulled the audience toward the stage. The connection between this band and the crowd was obvious to anyone within eyeshot.
Saturday night, 650North kicked it off with a set of their best stuff, powered by vocal harmonies that would capture any ear’s attention. Echoes followed with their largely instrumental set, using their mesmerizing and intricate music to sway the crowd to their favor. Last Place First followed later that night with some punk rock that left the crowd hungry for more.
During a spirited performance of A Failed Escape, the crowd decided that merely having five musicians on stage was not enough and therefore took matters into their own hands. Those who did stay on the sidelines looked up to see 15 people on stage doing their best to hump the amplifiers and of course play a little air guitar. Now that isn’t to say that Sunday was without its own theatrics. Metal Hertz turned the stage into a bloodbath when a chainsaw was retrieved from the onstage coffin and used to cut limbs from an unfortunate dummy. All in all a standard Emergenza weekend.
Got all that? Okay let’s do the checklist: Severed head? Yes. Chainsaw? Yes. Kickass music? Absolutely. Do yourself a favor: get yourself to Birdy’s to catch an Emergenza show again from Feb 17 – 20.
