ALWAYS ONE AWAY?
Rumor has it that this band found its name during a drunken stupor while playing darts, (not the smartest thing to do considering the tendency to throw them at the drummer) but the name doesn''t quite fit this week because these boys hit the bulls-eye by being the number one set of the evening (in photo). There were plenty of other thrills this week in T.O., here''s the short list.
Thursday-Spanish rockers The Gardenias spun a blend of old and new by mixing traditional instruments (a mandolin-like guitar made from an armadillo shell) with electrics. Marr stomped it hard with a pile of newfie hard-core. And our mom-to-be Petrolia let us hear the most intoxicating vocals.
Friday-S.K.N.S. threw down with melodic guitar riffs and the bass player/lead singer''s whiskey voice from hell, even the bar tenders voted for them. Bytch Kiddy had the back-woods energy, the Lightfoot heritage, and the good sense to play a bastardized Neil Young cover.
Saturday-Winter collided with summer when Summer Collides dominated the room; I can still here the guitarist''s goofy laugh. Forgery rocked the house with a truckload of their screaming fans. Ariel set the vibe with jungle rhythm, hippy lights, and incense.
Sunday-The underage boys from Airborn smoked the punk rock. Out-of-towners Colour of Each played a most tight set of hard rock. And the band that made it happen, The Late Great, indy-rocked us in the right way on this Sunday school night.
Now we go back to the barn and re-group for the next round. Break some legs and throw some darts.
