LAZY BANDS HAVE NO PLACE IN TORONTO
Thursday night at the KATHEDRAL, five lazy bands died young before they even hit the stage, they dropped out a few days before the show without a sound or a whimper, and good riddance. It takes a completely different kind of commitment to be a pro musician, and the “drop-out -five” don''t have it. We still had a killer week in Toronto any-godamn-ways. Here''s how it went down:
Night number one gave us the hardcore sound of OSIS who turned their fans into raving lunatics with a cutthroat set, and their guitarist''s Afro. Also, we had old school metal from RELOAD (nice guitar harmonies).
At number two, (no pun intended) SIX O''CLOCK NEWS whipped up frenzy with some serious hard rock with a mix of hip-hop attitude. The FIELDBABIES threw down a stunning set of intimate of well-written originals, and the fans licked the plate clean (and the spoon too). EIGHTY8 killed the house by playing the shit out of their rigs, the soundman even voted for them. OCTOBER did a tribute to U2 not only musically but also ethically, by taking donations for the recent tsunami victims.
Night three gave us the very scary but very entertaining TOLERANCE 0, these guys recently moved to T-dot from the tiny islands of the Azores, and already they have the beginnings of a solid fan base. My favorite band of the evening was RABID ERA, this band played EMERGENZA in 2004 and I tell you what, they learned a few things, they packed the house and performed on a level that was far superior from the last time I saw them at the OPERA HOUSE.
Number four had all the boys and girls squirming when TANGIE (in picture) mounted the stage, She seduced us with intoxicating vocals and tons of stage presence. QR5 showed us what the farms of Ontario can produce when mom and dad buy their son a cheap acoustic guitar and feed him a hearty helping of encouragement. And finally SOUND 23 rocked it out T.O. style and shut the place down, down, down.
Lazy bands have no place here because these guys and gals worked too hard to get where they are. This writer says, “respect mon” see you at the 360. Yeah!
