Gatsby first started in march 2000 after Kevin and Jesper S, who had been playing succesfully for some time in the pub circuit as a duo, met up with drummer Jesper C. The result was the first incarnation of Gatsby. The band locked themselves into the rehearsal studio for some months to perfect both the songs and the sound that would become the trademark of Gatsby. In these first few months whilst trying out various bass players, Jesper S took on the both the role of bass and guitar in order to attain the tightness required for gigging and recording.
After six months a suitable bass player was found in Morten Sonne, a highly experienced musician who had played both guitar and bass in many bands. With the full line up complete the band again went into rehearsals to fine tune and remove the last of the rough edges. The result was our first studio CD "It happened on a Tuesday", a reference to the day that the band met together for the first time.
The CD was an overwhelming success, released independently, it sold out on the second day. The response has been excellent to both the songs and the musicianship of Gatsby, with a second pressing of the CD a neccesity to cope with demand.
Live the band put on an assured show with the energy required for a rock band but also with the accoustics and melodies of modern pop. It is this mix of both accoustic and electric guitar in the music that gives the depth and mood to the songs. It isn't quite rock and it isn't quite pop, instead it nestles gently inbetween the two, appealing to both the young and the old alike.
There are some obvious influences in the music, the main songwriter, Kevin, comes from Scotland so there is definately a "British" feel to the songs, but with the rest of the band coming from Denmark it gives the final sound a different complexion, with the obvious undertone of other Danish songwriters showing through in the musicianship.
In September 2001 Jesper Stadel left the band to continue a solo career, however, after discussion the other members have decided to continue as a three piece and not audition a new guitarist.
The future looks positive for the band, they already have a loyal group of fans, which grows bigger every time they play live. The next step is of course a record contract and more gigs. But with the support of local radio stations and venues this might not be too far away!
