Modakai (Mod - a - kie), previously known as Belafonte, was formed by lead singer and songwriter Brian Hedenberg in the fall of 2004. On December 30, 2005, the band released their premier EP, Any Place is Better Than Here. The hot, melodic, and crunching grooves transition to smooth, euphoric, even sexual melodies, augmented by synth-like pads and strings that bring the true influences of David Bowie, Radiohead, Keane, Nina Simone, Blur, Pulp, and dozens of other Brit pop rock bands into a new EP to hit the scene. Modakai wear their influences on their sleeve, with fans toting their sound as “Pure Gold”.

The CD was available on iTunes, Amazon.com, and Virgin Megastores in the UK. Through their internet promotion the band built up a substantial following in the UK, leading to their release of two singles through dozens of college stations and several plays on BBC Radio 1 with Jo Whiley. The exposure lead to their EP selling out across the United Kingdom.
The band began work on their full length LP, Daft Karma, which was produced by Paul Williams and James McWilliams, and is being mixed down by Rip Rowan. The band recorded in over eight different studios depending on their needs for each song.

After touring across the southwest, the band decided to move to New York City in fall of 2006. Brian played several solo shows starting the buzz in New York and the band played their first show in New York at the famous Arlene’s Grocery (home of Jeff Buckley).

The band is about to start shopping their album, Daft Karma, and building a UK tour.
