Now out is the super-promising debut album from Turin band Skamarcio. Torpedone mixes the band’s influences from reggae, rocksteady and ska to give their fans an eclectic repertoire of cover songs and a sneak peak into the band's recent foray into songwriting. Their original pieces definitely make it clear whom the band holds dear to their hearts. Bands like the Mad Caddies, Reel Big Fish, and the Specials are clearly a huge influence on the band’s songwriting. Take the original song “Baffi”, whose lyrics joke about how to get girls with a great mustache, summing up the Skamarcio’s infectious, positive energy. It’s no wonder they like to say they started the band purely for kicks, using only members of other bands who, apparently, didn’t get enough. Ironically, it’s the un-expected list of non-ska covers they do, like “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay and “Little Lion Man” by Mumford & Sons, that showcase the band’s super-dynamic take on song arrangement. Groovy percussion, ethereal sounding effects on guitar and keys, not to mention the sultry sax, make these songs standouts. The album was fully self-produced in the band’s rehearsal room. Skamarcio are: Francis on guitar and vocals, Mauro on bass and vocals, Andrew on drums, Alessio on sax and vocals, Hector on trumpet and vocals, and Umberto on keyboard. They just rocked the stage at The Barrio in Turin for Emergenza Festival Italia, sweeping the most votes of the evening and making it to the semifinals. Tune back in with us at Emergenza.net for more details on their next gig.
