Something new under the sun
The music played by the Munshy paves the way to the new trends of rock of the second millennium
Emergenza Festival 2002 has finally reached its conclusion. Three days of live music have granted an unforgettable show within the framework of the beautiful woods of the Tauber Valley. All the bands that have played here in Germany have shown that the "Up & Coming" music is still alive. But, together with the congratulations and the positive comments from artists and operators (reported in a series of interviews) the three days of rock, peace, love and music (and beer) of Rothenburg suggest some important considerations. .
1) The winning band is unanimously considered as a great example of how rock can renew itself without repeating old patterns and, at the same time, without cutting its links with its roots. Very rarely can we listen to someting that is so extraordinarily NEW and, at the same time, so brilliant and "classical" in the best sense of the word. All those who state that "rock is dead" could have seen its rebirth here in Rothenburg. We are not exaggerating ; just listen to the show of the Munshy (now available also in this site in MP3) and you will agree with us.
2) Rock music was born in England but is now "living" all around the world. None of the 24 participating bands has any provincial, regional or national label. ONE WORLD - ONE NATION - ONE MUSIC is not only a slogan : it's mainly sort of international "cultural brothership" among live music and young musicians. While the world has lots of reasons to be divided every day, it would have been enough to watch the parties that have been made up after the concerts to understand how the young English, Canadiens, Germans, Italians, Belgians, Danish, Swiss, Austrians, French, etc. have been able to naturally create a common world and way of thinking that are more useful than many useful (and sometimes useless) international bodies.
3) The 2002 Emergenza edition has confirmed once for all the international dimension and the central importance of such festival in Europe and Canada. 3000 bands in 35 cities and 12 countries, 15000 musicians, 450 concerts, 2040 hours of live music, an audience of 500,000 and prizes for more than 200,000 Euro are not just figures. But the basic evolution of the organization is not limited to dimensions. No other festival in the world has the same number of bands that have reached a Major deal, no other organization invests the same amount of time and money for the promotion of emerging artists. More than 40 free showcases all over Europe, more than 10 compilations in free distribution, 60 demos produced, 12 TV specials and videos are, again, something more than just figures. The presence of important musicians and operators at the Finals confirms the value that is given to the festival : just take the example of the European final, where Eric Serrano guitarist of the OFFSPRING or Ralf Kotowski, number one of Columbia Sony Germany, have been some of the prestigious guests that made part of the jury (the full list of guests and a detail of the votes are reported in a dedicated section). Some further important news will be announced during the 2002-2003 season but, even failing any further developments, Emergenza has now shown that it is an irreplaceable tool to allow new generations of musicians to gain experience, spaces and professional competences.
4) Our last thought is dedicated to all those who attended in Rothenburg and to all those who, on the contrary, did not attend. The former belong to the alive world of production and music industries, whether they are big dynamic multinationals or small efficient emerging labels (for ex. Columbia Sony, Warner Bros, Audio Globe, etc.), or art directors of agencies that want to maintain a closer relationship with new trends and new ideas (K.O.K.S., Target, Oh my sweet, etc.), or journalists who want to find out the new frontiers of music and do not conform with the networks' "musical junk food" (like those of Oui Fm, Virgin Radio, Rai, Stream, etc.), or instrument manu
