7 questions to Arata before the World Finals

“Do you want to play at Rockefeller?!”

1) You have participated in the Emergenza Festival Edition 2018/2019. What made you decide to take part in it?

We love playing toghether, so whenever there is a possibility to play a gig, we take it! So when our drummer (Nikolai) saw an add saying “Do you want to play at Rockefeller?!” (Which is one of the biggest stage in Oslo) on Instagram, he immediately signed us up.

2) As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?

“HOLY MOLY MACARONY!” We are blown away and extremely grateful for the opportunity Emergenza have given us. We look very much forward to be playing in the world finals! To be honest, even just playing outside of Norway is insane! We have heard rumors that the crowds in Germany are crazy!

3) What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?

The best moment has got to be playing at the Rockefeller venue. I mean that’s why we signed up, to play there. Seeing the crowd going crazy at such an amazing venue was unbelievable...

4) What's behind your band's name? Any specific meaning?

“Arata” is a word that comes from Japan. While the “Kanji” looks like this , you can read it in different ways, but we choose to read it as something “new” or “fresh”. Our music is always changing and growing into something new, so that’s why we think that this name is an appropriate way of representing us.

5) Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage? And one which happened in backstage or during the preparation of a show?

Well, we don’t know if this is something you would find funny, but it’s definitely interesting... on the first gig in the Emergenza festival, our bassist (Øyvind), broke his toe after a jump he did for a photo shoot only 2 days before the concert. So during the whole concert, he had to sit down on a chair while playing. And for those of you who have seen us live before, you know that Øyvind loves to jump around and just go absolutely insane on the stage!

And on the second gig we did, our drummer (Nikolai) was run over by a Taxi, while biking from another gig to the Emergenza gig. This was about 50min before we were gonna start playing. So he took a lot of pain killers, and played the gig, but he had to lead with his left hand, cause his right hand got damaged in the accident.

6) How would you describe your music ?

We like to describe it as Energetic, rhythmical and hardhitting

7) What are your short to medium term plans after the Emergenza's world final?

We have already booked and planed out a little Norway tour as soon as we get back to Norway, so we are super exited about that. And during the coming fall, we are also playing in Maastricht (Netherlands), for the Imagine festival 2019.

“Energetic, Rythmical, and hard hitting”, are some of the words that describe Arata´s music! This Drum and Bass duo plays instrumental rock music that creates a massive sound image. The sound real Drum and Bass should have. Even with a broken foot, and a concussion they will play with their hearts content.  The promising band from Norway has mastered their craft combining their love for odd time signatures, and melodic complexity inspired by the likes of Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Animals as Leaders and Luke Holland. Their young age and drive will surely give them a great future in the music scene. In addition to the duo, they also have secured the superb vocalist, Jonas Hansen from Fixation with them on stage. “Get ready for a heavy energy kick!”
