You have participated in the Emergenza Festival Edition 2014/2015. What made you decide to take part in it?
17th of July 2014, was the date I released my debut-EP ”Alfen – Hungrende” and the musicvideo to the single ”Helt væk” (on youtube) and I was looking for some gigs. Then I read about Emergenza and thought: “Hey, here is an opportunity to play at some of Denmark’s best venues and perform in front of some big crowds and hopefully a foreign audience”, which I did in Sweden and now in Germany.
As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?
Actually I don’t think I’ve realised how awesome it really is! My live-dj BenniG and I are preparing our best show yet.
What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?
The first gig on ”Rust”, when I saw the crowd wave their hands and rap along. And then of course when the judges in “Store Vega” said: “The winner of the Danish final 2015 is…. ALFEN”. It was such a rush! I couldn’t hold my hands down!
What's behind your artist's name? Any specific meaning?
Alfen means “The elf”. My homies find me a little bit sneaky and crafty.
If you had to choose a famous song that represents you, which one would it be?
The same song that I have tattooed on my underarm, witch remains a secret.
If you had another artist name, what would it be?
One of my homies calls me Triple-G. It means: “GayGuyGangster”. I find the name hilarious. But of course it’s just a joke. Sure I’m gay, sure I’m a guy, but not much of a gangster.
Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage?
In the Danish final there was this creepy older random drunk geezer. He was crazy about me. He tried to climb the stage many times to give me a rose. He was collapsing on the front of the crowd and howling wildly. (Sounded like a horse giving birth). A bit distracting! Luckily people kept him down from the stage.
What can audiences expect from one of your live performances?
They’ll never get bored. All my tracks are very varying and atmosphere-changing. From fresh funky grooves to heavy electro-hiphop with crazy synth-solos and jazzy piano. I practice my live piano and synth-solos and dance moves but I always end up improvising. Dj BenniG makes cool effects and breakdowns. Even though most of the crowd at Taubertal Open Air don’t understand danish, I hope they’ll feel the beats, sense a story and a hungry guy. Hate it or love it. But you’ll never get bored.
Before you go on stage, do you have a ritual or a good luck charm that goes everywhere with you?
BenniG and I rile up each other. Push each other a bit. I send a prayer… and boom! The show begins…
What is your dream gig?
Orange Stage at Roskilde Festival!
Do you have any hobbies? What do you do when you don’t play?
Detailed pencil drawing to painting on oversized canvasses, weird adventures with friends, chess, poker, shopping, enjoy cooking world cuisine and much more.
If you could invite a band or an artist at your party, dead or alive, who would it be?
Michael Jackson. No discussion.
What are your short to medium term plans after the international final?
Create more music, develop my skills and publish my next work.
What question did I forget? Can you suggest a question you would want me to ask?
What does music means to you?
Music is not a hobby for me. It’s my life. I’ve sit by the piano since the age of five. My mum played all kinds of music to me and gave me pots and pans to drum on, when I was a baby. My piano teacher had a hard time teaching me, because I always wanted to play my own melodies. Music follows me wherever I go, whatever I do, to make my life complete. Music is a universal language, witch still have no boundaries.
Why do you think you deserve to win the 2015 Festival edition?
I produce and play all instruments myself: Guitar, drums, and percussion, piano and all electronic. This gives me the ultimate freedom to create my music exactly how I like it to be. I believe in dedicated hard work, I’m always developing, and I think I can bring a fresh twist into the Emergenza Festival.
