That’s King Wong, not King Kong

Sydney rock and rollers King Wong take their electric, animalistic tunes to the stage at The Lair this Friday

The band’s self-description as animals making love is definitely not far off—there’s a primitive, animalistic, sexual energy underlying everything King Wong does. (With a name like that, you’d expect nothing less, really). With songs contrasting super-gritty, heavily compressed guitars and fast paced riffs with slower, reverb heavy sections, they create a totally dynamic, original sound. The guitar that opens up their single “Tori Black”—yes, it’s about the porn star—could have walked right off of a Dead Weather album and makes for an totally electric, if simplistic, chorus section with the guttural, “You gotta give it to me… whoo!”… “Spank me!” of the singer. Amazing contrast to the verses of the song. “Best Bad Luck” has a dark, surfy vibe in the guitar, highlighting the sultriness the band possesses, paired with the almost child-like straight forwardness of the lyrics. The vocal delivery matches even Jack White in its hysterical enthusiasm and conviction. Be sure to check out their kick ass live show at The Lair this Friday, July 18th when they go on for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. Click here for more show info.
