Des Chio: Adding an Experimental Element to an Indie Pop Sound

Emergenza gives a good listen to the tunes of Melbourne indie pop band Des Chio before they’re set to hit the stage at The Espy

This experimental young indie pop band from Melbourne doesn’t shy away from treading new territory. Des Chio has got a great ear for melody and superb vision in pairing it up with lyrics that hit home for a broad range of listeners—and they love to combine that pop mentality with an experimental approach. Check out their original song “Against the World”, whose cool vibe and otherworldly synth sounds contrast the otherwise very crisp, clear pop sound. Fellow Australian bands like San Cisco and last year’s Emergenza winner Mercury White are big influences on Des Chio and it definitely comes out in their sound—upbeat, clear guitar tone and amazing use of vocal harmonies. Another one of their original tunes “Time With Me” shows off their ability to write slower, more sentimental tunes—this one is about the bitterness of a break up—with hooks that just bury themselves into your head. Both songs can be streamed on their Facebook band page. The band has already played at The Espy, The Central Hotel, and festivals all over Melbourne and are now gearing up to hit the stage at The Espy again—this time for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. If you’re looking for your next favourite indie pop band from Melbourne, Des Chio might be it. So be sure to come check them out this Saturday, May 10th. More details on the show date here.
