Catching up with Acoustic Guitar Talent Nathan Varga

Acoustic guitar extraordinaire Nathan Varga sits down to talk to us about how the first step went and what’s in store for the semifinals

Nathan Varga has picked up a few tricks of the trade since his last concert at The Espy for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. There’s one thing that hasn’t changed with him, and that is his insane talent on the acoustic guitar. He implements finger picking, multiple capos, harmonics and percussive techniques to make his guitar playing sparkle with depth and intensity. You’ve never heard anything quite like it. Be sure to check him out as he takes to the stage for the semifinals on the competition this Thursday, June 19th, and in the meantime read our catch up session with the artist.

FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO THE MUSIC OF NATHAN VARGA?
Many people describe my music as ‘different’. That is really how I would describe it in one word. I love to experiment and use many different techniques and ways of playing. My music is simply created with my acoustic guitar, multiple capos, alternate tunings and my hands that produce percussive, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements. It’s a full rounded sound that creates the feel of more than one person playing.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
The energy in the room—it was electrifying! The crowd support really does my heart good. Although it is incredibly gratifying and euphoric to have a lot of support, with many fans come down. I have learnt from Jon Acuff that you must always play to the size of your heart, not to the size of your audience.

OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
My song “How Long Must You Wait...” It is a song with a meaning and story a lot of people can really relate to. During the song the audience began to clap along. I did not expect such a response. It was amazing! The only way to receive a big reaction from the entire audience is to have a big impact on a single person first. It starts with one, and that person then impacts another person. And so the ripple effect begins. One claps, several claps, and soon after you have pretty much the whole room of people clapping a long.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRST ROUND AND WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
Intriguing the audience with your first song is a must. Ending with a captivating song is a must. What you do in between to keep your audience engaged is crucial. I experienced a great night that taught me to always have an authentic experience, and give your audience something more than just music. Give them you, your character, and something different every time. It has to be real, and passion always must be shown.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
I’ve been networking with a lot of people, getting out there meeting others and building relationships while sharing my music and who I am as a person. I remember being in the hairdresser’s one day and I had my guitar with me. Soon after I was playing a song for the lady who had just cut my hair! Music can do wondrous things and I’m grateful for the experiences it has given me, and will continue to give for others. In prep for my gig I’ve just been really practicing, sharing my vision with others, and getting excited for the opportunity to go to GERMANY! I see myself going there and I’m ready to give my “A” game.

SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
It is incredibly gratifying. Knowing that the heart and hard work you put into your music is taking you a step closer to what it is you desire. Reaching out to more people as I progress is something I am excited about! There are many people beyond the borders of Australia that I am aiming to reach out to. Here I come Germany!

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE ESPY?
More excitement and along with some new songs I have plenty to give. I plan to have a larger impact on others, and express my passion sharing the music I love to write. I am so grateful to have that ability and be able to deliver to larger audiences as I progress with my music journey.
