À LA UNE
The Spyro began on spring 2007 when Hape contacted Ossi, a singer looking for a band. Hape and Ossi had a couple of beers, discussed about music and decided to form a new band. Guitarist Antti was found shortly after the meeting and Ossi asked his old friend Toni to play bass. Toni agreed with enthusiasm, though he hadn't played a note for the last seven years!
Search for a drummer
The next step was to find a drummer. That wasn't as easy as one might think. Good drummers with enough free time turned out to be a really rare species. Most drummers played in several bands already. Some candidates just weren't good enough. The Spyro, not that it had a name or a drummer at that time, began to rehearse at Hape's studio in December 2007.
The first suitable drummer, Pate, was found in January 2008. After a couple of rehearsals Pate decided to quit. So the quest for a drummer continued. After several candidates, Simo proved to be perfect and he joined the band in April 2008.
New singer
At this point, Hape, Antti and Toni had rehearsed quite regularly, but Ossi had attended only a couple of rehearsals. Ossi decided to leave the band due to lack of time just before the first session with the new drummer. So now they had a drummer but no singer. Fortunately, it showed out that there were a lot of singers available. When Olli came in for an audition, they knew the search was over. The Spyro was ready to rock'n'roll in May 2008.
A name for the band
The band didn't have a name yet. These five guys who didn't know each other before the band decided to go out for a few beers and give the band a name. Everyone listed their suggestions on paper and after a couple of pints the papers were drawn out. Many suggestions were considered and many drinks consumed. In the morning they didn't have a name for the band but they did have a hell of a hangover!
The next couple of weeks some of the suggestions were considered again. A name in Olli's list stuck in everyone's head: The Spyro.
