The debut album Funky Estofado distills seemingly disparate styles into seamless
vibrant music. While songs center on the hook, compelling lyrics tell another part of
the story. High energy live shows and instrumental abilities complete the picture.
Journalists and fans have compared the group’s sound and energy to artists such as
Galactic, G Love and Special Sauce, Fishbone, and the Scabs.
The Coalition story starts in 2001 when bassist Steve Tycz and drummer Brian Bruendl began channeling funk, soul, and other music styles that inspired them into high energy rock. They immediately set out to find other musicians with a similar vision. Saxophonist Matt Ostlund was next aboard of the current lineup. He brought
years of experience from performing with jazz, merengue, rock, and salsa groups.
2002 brought Guitarist Sean Berry into the UGC musical universe, bringing with
him his own brand of jazz funk fusion. John Vold took over as frontman of the Coalition in 2004, focusing the groove created by the band and adding his own instrumental abilities to the mix.
