A Life Expired formed in late 2003 with Jon and former drummer Chuck, searching for a guitarist. At the same time, Vocalist/Guitarist Jaime Nelson is making his own music projects at home, looking for a band. The three got together but most of the rehearsing only consisted of Jaime and Jon (playing drums) in Jon's downstairs with limited equipment. Using a 10 watt crate amp, and a broken Les Paul, Jaime and Jon wrote "shelter" which is the oldest and only song still played from the original three. In 2004, Jon found Keenan online as a bass player, and decided to give him a try. From the first rehearsal, everything sounded right. Chuck got back in the scene and now they had a complete band. The band decided on the name Cornerstone, and put up a few songs on the internet. Jaime and Keenan eventually left the band to play harder and heavier tunes. Jaime was still on guitar, and Keenan was now playing drums. Their first song was 80 Proof, which is now their most played song. Jaime and Keenan were now in need of a bass player, but could not find one. Having left the band from conflict of interests, not personal issues, they decided to get back with Jon... on bass. Jon played guitar so he gave it a shot on bass. "Being a guitarist and drummer, he did pick up the bass pretty quickly, and can play whatever riff I write... It works out"
