Beneath the ground you walk come five imports to take over. From four corners of the earth, five souls fled to a life of freedom - a life of music that has brought them to Ontario. But they have not always been like this...the story begins years ago, when some of the friendships that form the foundation of the band as we know it were created. Roydin Monteath (lead guitar) had strived to get a band going ever since he came to Canada from the Middle East. His first friend was Liam Harasym (bass guitar), who was imported from Ireland. However when they first met, Liam wasn’t interested in making music. Roydin also met Heston Jones (guitar) who was an import to Canada from India. They began playing Blink-182 covers, with Heston on guitar and Roydin on drums since they could not find anyone else to do it. Eventually, Liam was brought into the mix, and the trio (known as Unknown Authority at this point) began playing small shows and writing music. The search for a real drummer then became priority - Heston met a guy named Arthur Latoszek who was imported from Poland, eventually he would play drums for the band. The puzzle was almost complete, but the band was missing a singer! A Filipino import named Earl Abalajon III would eventually fulfill the needs of the band. After a few jam sessions, the band really started to come together, but the need for a new name was the next problem. After maturing as a group, and the addition of new members, Unknown Authority sounded lame. Going through names like Forever Today, The Revolution, and The Handsome Devils, the band finally decided on the Imports because of the multicultural nature of the band. The first show the band performed was at a Jam Van Battle of the Bands held at Philip Pocock Secondary School in Mississauga. They went on to win this battle, giving them a berth into the finals held at the Opera House on May 28, 2005. While preparing for this show, they recorded a demo with Greg Dawson (Moneen, The Junction, Wheels on the Bus) at B.W.C. Studios in Brampton. The release of this demo coincided with the Opera House show. The band proceeded to win the 2005 Regional Battle of the Bands presented by Jam Van. After only half a year together, they have already developed a fan following. With their distinct sound combining jazz, rock, funk and more, these imports are coming along fast. So look out, ’cause these guys will be talked about!
