Established in Sesto San Giovanni, a Milanese suburb once famous for its steel and metal-working industry, Sestomarelli have been proposing their audiences a wide offer of folk and punk songs by covering the hits of such bands as The Pogues or The Clash - together with pub and traditional classics like Whiskey in the jar, Dusty Miller or The star of the County Down - since 2007. It was back in 2011 that they decided to switch to original songwriting and one and a half year later they finally came out with their first full-length album dubbed Acciaierie e ferriere lombarde folk. Promoted by A Buzz Supreme and distributed worldwide by Audioglobe the record clearly shows the impact and influence that the Italian and international country and folk tradition had on the band. Released late July in 2013, it managed to gain some attention and appreciation on a handful of first-class national musical magazines (Buscadero, Blow-Up, Alias, just to mention a few); and a series of radio networks such as Radio Popolare or the Slovenian Radio Capodistria. The first take from Acciaierie e ferriere lombarde folk, called Un’ora lurida, was also issued as a single on the Just Kids online compilation published by A Buzz Supreme. Whilst the single aims at depicting the miserable lives of many underpaid musicians all over the country, other episodes try to describe the social and political metamorphosis their very homeland has been facing in the recent past (La sirena). Songs like Che la festa cominci, Signora Wolf - that pays its debt to Pulp Fiction’s Mr. Wolf - or Briciole display a more intimate and self-inspective form of inspiration. Indeed others like Stones or Lasciami sanguinare sound more aggressive and definitely look forward to putting the punkish side of the combo into light. The Sestomarelli line-up is formed by Alex Aliprandi (all guitars, backing vocals and mandolin); Mariela Valota (violin); Roberto Carminati (acoustic guitar, lead and backing vocals); Alessandro Muscillo on the bass and drummer Christian Aliprandi. All music was composed by Alex Aliprandi; lyrics were written by Roberto Carminati.
