    TOPVERSLAGEN
Formed in 2006 by former Venus Sparkplug / Greenhouse / Lola Bassist Joe Black, Lola / Caddywompas guitarist Pat Fisher, and Venus Sparkplug drummer Jeff Reed, Girls Like Cigarettes looks to take all the band member's previous influences and merge them into something refreshing and new. Not bound by any one musical style, GLC deftly puts the moody acoustic atmospherics of Jeff Buckley next to the powerpop of Husker Du/R.E.M. next to the Angular Post-Punk of early Cure or Joy Division. The group hopes to emphasize songwriting and melody, mood and atmosphere, and subversive subliminal homoerotic messages, just like their favorite bands, many of whom were highlighted on MTV's 120 Minutes back in the day. GLC hopes to achieve this without opting into current rock/pop's corrupt marketing tactics and cookie-cutter songwriting methods.

Joe Black: After spending substantial time on the Maryland side of the D.C. Punk Rock scene, and loyally attending FUGAZI shows in crappy churches as a teenager, Joe Black spent several years in seminal Maryland emo group Greenhouse (with Nate Bell of Dischord recording artists LUNGFISH and March Berrong of SLOWJETS/LANDSPEEDRECORD) before heading off to do his own thing. After a stint as bassist in VENUS SPARKPLUG, which released it's debut album on JIMMY HAHA's (JIMMIE'S CHICKEN SHACK) FOWL RECORDS, Black decided to forge out on his own, forming the group LOLA with CADDYWOMPAS/AT TEN PACES guitarist PAT FISHER. LOLA played around the Eastern seaboard, producing the coulda-shoulda-woulda been a hit "Low-Fidelity," and, generally, trashing motel 6 swimming pools and lobbies whilst opening up for the likes of LOCAL H, CHRIS BARRON from the SPIN DOCTORS, and Rodney from DEAD MILKMEN (Burn witch burn), ANGIE APARO, MARY LOU LORD, THE BASTARDS OF MELODY, and ROYAL CITY. The group hit its nadir in 2003, with the return of Pat Fisher from "sabbatical," appearing on Pat Duncan's legendary underground radio show on WFMU (New York City) in May of 2003 (available for download at wfmu.org), followed closely by a huge (drunken) gig at the Mercury Lounge in NYC with Strokes-buddies LONGWAVE. While Columbia Records liked the group well enough to consider initial development, the ole' Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll bug split the group apart by 2003. In 2006, Black formed GIRLS LIKE CIGARETTES with Fisher and VENUS SPARKPLUG drummer Jeff Reed.
