Few modern bands have managed to perfect the traditional rock’n’roll sound that millions fell in love with in the past. While finding a group of musicians that depict the classic rock that we all know and love is a rarity, we at Emergenza have been lucky enough to find a band that lives and breathes rock’n’roll. Tiger & The Rogues is a local Sydney band that is hell-bent on keeping the spirit of rock’n’roll alive. Drawing influence from rock gods like the Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead, coupled with sexy bluesy tunes, Tiger & The Rogues emits a sound that flows well with rock, yet has a sound that is distinctly their own. Be sure to come out to The Metro on April 13th to witness the revival of rock’n’roll.
SO, FIRST OF ALL, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SIGN-UP TO COMPETE IN EMERGENZA FESTIVAL?
The chance to play amazing venues in my own home town first and foremost as well as the opportunity to go to Europe!
YOU GUYS BLEND A LOT OF DIFFERENT INFLUENCES TOGETHER IN ORDER TO CREATE AN INCREDIBLE, UNIQUE SOUND. HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
Definitely a blend of influences. It’s like the Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, the Black Keys (and even a bit of Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead) all converged together in my head and then came out via my songs. Like the human equivalent of New Orleans – a melting pot of influences with the results streaming out. To put it simply, good ol’ fashioned blues rock pop – music you can tap your feet to.
ON YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE, YOU SAY THAT YOU INTEND TO KEEP CLASSIC ROCK AND ROLL ALIVE. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING TOWARDS THIS GOAL?
I feel that in the world, and definitely in Australia, there is a distinct lack of rock’n’roll. The majority is pop obviously, but in Australia, other than pop we have country or indie (or whatever they’re calling themselves now). But no rock’n’roll. We had it with AC/DC and Powderfinger and Jet but these bands aren’t current or aren’t even around anymore. There is a void and we aim to fill it.
LEAD FEMALE VOCALISTS ARE HARD TO COME BY IN BATTLE OF THE BANDS SCENE. WHAT IS IT LIKE GOING INTO A COMPETITION WHERE THE VAST MAJORITY OF ALL CONTESTANTS ARE MALE?
Vocally easy. I find a lot of the guys don’t warm their voices up or actually study how their songs are made up and which vocal notes will work best. They don’t take the time to analyze their own vocals and lyrics. Maybe because it’s not a “manly” thing to do. So it never worries me. I know that I look damn good at the front of my band and that everyone else in the audience will know it’s not another badly dressed guy up there hitting bum notes. And they start to pay attention. It’s great! I’m the minority so it means the band gets more attention.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST IN REGARDS TO THE COMPETITION?
Any feedback or constructive criticism is always welcome. Ed (the drummer) and I both did degrees in music so we’re used to constantly get advice from people in the know. And we’ve learnt to take on board the relevant things and discard the completely pointless ideas. But hearing someone else’s take on our band is always a good thing.
WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT FROM ONE OF YOUR LIVE PERFORMANCES?
Sexiness. Rock’n’roll was originally a slang term for sex for African Americans. I think with all this saccharine pop, whiney country and too-cool-for-school indie, that level of attraction is gone. We aim to put the roll back in rock’n’roll. Looking forward to it. x
