Steeplejack aims to steal the show

Hopeful Melbourne contestants, Steeplejack, speak with Emergenza about their debut festival performance

Steeplejack, the four-piece rock band from Melbourne, was kind enough to take some time out of their preparations for upcoming shows to chat with me. Originally formed in 2010, this band has used their experience as a tool to further enhance the listener’s experience. They pride themselves in only writing music that is fun to perform live. It is this unique connection with the audience that Steeplejack hopes to exhibit in their show Thursday, March 28th, in the first round of Melbourne competition. Be sure to come out and witness this incredible act in action!

HEY GUYS, SO I HAVE TO ASK: WHY EMERGENZA? WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE PART IN THE FESTIVAL?
We draw inspiration from a mix of ‘older’ artists. Emergenza is a movement with a strong history and positive impact for the music industry, so we wanted to be part of that.

ARE YOU CONFIDENT AS YOU ENTER THE FIRST ROUND OF COMPETITION? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU GUYS ARE NERVOUS ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO COMPETING?
Yes, we are confident. But only because we have such great support from people we love. Nerves are always there, and that’s probably healthy - we’re putting ourselves out there to be judged by everyone!

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH WHEN IT COMES TO PERFORMING LIVE?
Funnily enough that would have to be the music itself. We try to only write songs that we really like and enjoy performing. If we like it, chances are our audience will too.

ANY INTERESTING STORIES REGARDING THE FORMATION OF STEEPLEJACK?
When we were still forming in Dec 2010 we were having a rehearsal with our second guitarist for the first time. Our bassist, Josh Hennessy and new guitarist, Matt Romano and I (Matt Lister) had set up and started playing. Our drummer, James McCall, was running late, he rocked up half way through the song we were playing! So when he arrived he hopped behind the drums to finish off the other half of the song. Once we finished the song we introduced James to Matt Romano. So technically we’ve been playing together before we knew each other! We took it as a sign…

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
Music for the thinking person: Vintage/Modern rock songs with a focus on meaningful lyrical content that challenges our listeners.

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS THE MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN REGARDS TO THE COMPETITION?
The opportunity! To be in the running for a massive prize, and also to meet and listen to other great artists – hear their journey.

I NOTICED THAT YOU GUYS ALREADY HAVE AN ALBUM OUT AND ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON AN EP. WHEN IS THE RELEASE DATE AND WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM YOUR NEW SONGS?
Yeah we’ve been at the grindstone. The EP is finished, comes out on March 9.
We really zeroed in on making every song’s own strength stand out leaving very little (if any) weaknesses from track 1 to 5. Each track is special with its own personality.
